Instructions:
1. Pressure cook moong dal with a pinch of turmeric powder for 5 - 6 whistles.
2. Clean and peel off the skin of ridge gourd.
3. Cut the ridge gourd into small pieces. We are not going to pressure cook ridge gourd since it is so soft, get cooked easily and will mash up if we cook in pressure cook.
4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Allow the mustard seeds to splutter. Then add urad dal, curry leaves and hing and stir for few seconds till the urad dal slightly gets change in color.

6. Meanwhile grind grated coconut and cumin seeds in a mixer with little water.
7. Add cooked moong dal, ground cocount, red chilli powder and salt to the ridge gourd and mix well. Add required water. Allow it to cook till the raw smell of coconut goes off and coconut, moong dal and ridge gourd mix well.
8. Switch off the stove and garnish with coriander leaves.
Peerkangai kootu is ready to serve.
My notes:
1. If you add 1 tsp of Kasthuri Methi and 1 tsp of Garam Masala, it will be a delicious side dish for roti/chapathis.
2. You can also replace moong dal with toor dal to get a sweet taste.
looks yummy...mmmm
