Cod Liver Oil is a rich source of Vitamin A, Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, if you approach a doctor for minor skin problems, hair fall, hair loss, hair growth, the chances are high that they will suggest you to consume Cod liver oil. Omega-3 fatty acids is a kind of unsaturated fat which our body requires. But our body is not able to produce it.  So, we need to find external sources to include Omega-3 fatty acids in our diet.

I just bought it without knowing that is not vegetarian. I have seen the capsules in many of my friends and relatives' homes. So, I bought it blindly long back.

I have listed few vegetarian substitutes for cod liver oil. Cod liver oil gives DHA and EPA(long chain variety of fatty acids) which can be used directly by the body. But the vegetarian sources give AHA which has to be processed by the body.

Oils with Omega-3 fatty acids: Canola oil, Flaxseed oil, soybean oil and Rapeseed oil.

Nuts with Omega-3 fatty acids: Peacons, Walnuts, Pistachios, Butternuts, Beechnuts, Hickory nuts, Pine nuts

Seeds rich in omega-3 fatty acids: Flaxseed, Chia seeds, Breadfruit seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Poppy seeds, Sesame seeds

Vegetables with Omega-3 fatty acids: Broccoli, Spinach, Lettuce, Cauliflower, Zucchini, Brussels sprouts, Turnip, Kale, Cabbage, Kidney beans

Caution and Side effects of Cod liver oil:


Consulting a doctor before taking any dietary supplements including cod liver oil is highly recommended. Over dosage of vitamins or any other supplements might lead to adverse effects.
Pregnant women who includes Vitamin A in their diet(in form of regular food too) should not take cod liver oil as over dosage of Vitamin A affects the baby.

Nowadays oceans are being dumped by industrial wastage. Cod liver oil might be toxic. So, it is important to check for quality and branded cod liver oil in the market. It is also allergic to the people who are allergic to fish.
