Bottle Gourd(Sorakkai/Suraikkai) is one of the best known vegetables for weight loss. It contains 96% of water and provides just 12 calories per 100 g. Since the water content is more, Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai is a very good vegetable for summer. It is also very good for heart and keeps blood pressure in check. If I make Bottle Gourd Stew- Sorakkai kootu for lunch, I do not want to prepare anything else other than rice for my kid. I will just mix the Bottle Gourd Stew/Sorakkai Kootu with the rice and give him. It is very easy to prepare and the Bottle Gourd Stew/Sorakkai Kootu has the rich benefits of Moong Dal and Bottle Gourd.
Bottle Gourd Stew/Sorakkai Kootu:

Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai - 1
Moong Dal - 20 - 30 g (based on the size of Bottle Gourd)
Turmeric powder - A pinch
Red Chilli powder - 1 to 1.5 tsp (based on the size of Bottle Gourd)
Salt - As required
Sugar - 1/2 tsp optional
Coconut grated - 2 tbsp
Jeera/Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad Dal - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves- Few
Hing - A pinch
1. Clean the Bottle Gourd with water. Peel off the skin and cut the Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai into 3 or 4 pieces. Cut the pieces vertically as shown in the picture and take off the seeds completely. Now, cut the Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai into small pieces.
2.Cook the Moong Dal and Bottle Gourd pieces with turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles in high flame and 5 minutes in simmer. I cook along with the rice itself. It makes my work easy.
3. Grind grated coconut and jeera seeds in mixer with little water.
4. Heat oil in a pan, add the 'To Temper' items one by one. Mustard seeds should splutter first.
5. Add the cooked Bottle Gourd/Sorakkai and Moong Dal. Add ground paste, red chilli powder, salt and sugar if required.
Now, Bottle Gourd Lentil Stew/Sorakkai Kootu is ready to serve. Add sugar if you are going to give it to kids. It will be more tasty if we add sugar to any kind of kootu.
