A sambar without dal recipe which can be made in just 10 minutes.
It is really needed to know some quick recipes which can help you when you are tired, not having enough time to spend for cooking, unexpected guests, not having enough ingredients and so on. Yesterday I was in the same situation when I did not have time to make Idli sambar with dal. Also, I did not have coconut to make chutney. So, I decided to try this Quick Idli Sambar recipe with gram flour(kadalamavu in Tamil). I would say that this quick sambar cannot beat idli samabr recipe with dal or Udupi Sambar in taste. But the quick idli sambar beat both of them in terms of time. Yes, I made it really quick. Even though it did not taste so good, it tasted good. It is worth trying when you running out of time.

Quick Idli Sambar Recipe
Ingredients:
To Temper:
- Big onion - 1
- Tomato - 1
- Green Chilli - 2
- Tamarind - Small size
- Gram Flour/Basin Flour/Kadalai Mavu - 1.5 tbsp
- Sambar powder - 1.5 - 2 tsp
- Salt - As required
- Turmeric Powder - A pinch
- Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp(optional)
- Jeera Powder - 1/2 tsp(optional)
- Coriander Leaves - To garnish
- Oil - 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
- Curry Leaves - Few
- Hing - A pinch
Instructions:
1. Soak the tamarind in required water for 5 minutes. You can also heat the tamarind with water for few seconds to speed up the process. Extract the tamarind juice and keep aside.
2. Chop the onion into lengthy pieces and chop the tomato roughly into small pieces.
3. Mix the gram flour/basin flour/kadalai mavu in 75 ml water and mix well without any lumps.
4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the urad dal and fry for a minute. Add curry leaves, green chillies and hing and fry for another minute.
5. Add chopped onions and fry well till they turn to light brown color.
7. Once the tomato is cooked, add the extracted tamarind juice, turmeric powder, sambar powder, coriander powder(optional), jeer powder(optional) and salt. Give a quick stir and allow it to start boiling.
8. Once the sambar starts boiling, add gram flour and water mixture to the sambar. Allow it to boil till the raw smell of gram flour goes off.
9. Garnish with coriander leaves.
