Easy Recipes with Rice - Sambar Sadham/Sambar Rice Recipe

Sambar rice is one of the easy recipes you can make with rice. Prepare this and pack for lunch. You will never get disappointed for not preparing rice, sambar and vegetable side dish. It has yummy taste with the goodness of vegetables.

Sambar rice

Sambar Sadham/Sambar Rice:

Serving size  - 2


Rice - 200 g
Toor Dal - 100 g
Sambar Powder - 1.5 tbsp(Click here for the recipe of Sambar Powder)
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
Hing - A pinch
Salt - As required
Tamarind - Small lemon size ball
Small onions(halved) - handful
Tomato(finely chopped) - 1
Water - 1 litre
Carrot - 1
Potato - 1
Peas - 1/2 cup(optional)
Drumstick - 1(optional)
Ghee - 2 tsp
Corriander leaves - a bunch

To Temper:

Mustard seeds - 1 tsp

Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves - Few
Oil - 1 tbsp
Red Chilli - 1


1. Rinse rice and toor dal well and keep it soaked for 30 minutes(if you do not have time to wait, you can soak till you cut the vegetables). 
2. Soak tamarind in little water. Keep aside.
3. Heat oil in a pressure pan, add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, red chilli and curry leaves. Wait till it splutter.
4. Add small onions, tomato and fry well for 3 minutes.
5. Add all the vegetables, sambar powder, turmeric powder, salt and hing. Fry well for 5 minutes.
6. Add rice, toor dal and water.
7. Extract 100 ml of tamarind juice and add it.
8. Pressure cook for 5 whistles and put it in simmer for 5 minutes.
9. Once it is cooked and the pressure is released, drizzle the ghee and mix well.
10. Garnish with corriander leaves. Serve it hot.
