Thuvaramparuppu Sadam - Tamil Nadu Variety Rice recipe

Hello friends,

This is my one my favorite foods from my mother's preparation. During my college days, whenever my mom asks me what to do for lunch, my response will be Rice with Dal/ Thuvaramparuppu Satham. Rice with Toor Dal recipe is a very simple and healthy recipe. It helped me lot of times since the ingredients are readily available in my kitchen and does not need to run for shopping. Thanks to my mom who gave this wonderful Rice with Toor Dal recipe. This is a very famous Tirunelveli Recipe.

Toor dal rice



Rice with Toor Dal recipe(Thuvaramparuppu Satham):


Serving Size: 4

Ingredients:


Rice - 300 g
Toor Dal - 75 g
Coconut - Grated from half coconut
Turmeric Powder - 1tsp
Onions(Medium Size) - 2 Finely chopped
Asafoetida - A pinch
Tamarind - 1 lemon size
Salt - As required.
Gingelly oil - As required(Optional)
Water - 900 ml

To grind:

Red Chilli - 9
Small Onion/Shallots - 5
Garlic - 10 cloves
Jeera/Cumin - 3/4 tsp

To Temper:

Onion - 2 tsp Mustard seeds - 2 tsp
Curry leaves - Few


Preparation:


1. Rinse the rice and toor dal well.


           



2. Grind the items listed under 'To Grind' with little water. No need to grind it to a smooth paste. Let it be as shown in the picture.

                               
 
3. Extract 100 ml juice from tamarind.

                                                  

4. Heat oil in a pan and fry mustard seeds and wait till it splutters. Then add curry leaves followed by onions till they turn to golden brown color.

                                                  

5. Add rice, toor dal, water, tamarind juice, grated coconut, the mixture of 'To grind' items, salt, turmeric powder, asafoetida, fried mustard seeds, curry leaves and onions in a pressure cooker. Mix it well, close the lid and switch on the stove.


    

 6. Cook it for 5 whistles in high flame then put it in simmer for 5 minutes. Switch off the stove.

   

Now, the Rice with Toor Dal/Thuvaramparuppu Satham is ready to serve. Pappad is enough to have a tasty lunch. Add gingelly oil if you wish. It will make the rice so tasty and yummy to have.

  2. I Like the Dal recipe much because it is a traditional Indian variety rice which is easier to prepare and also it is nutrition rich food.
