Masala Oats Recipe - How to prepare Masala Oats at home:


Masala Oats - A healthy, easy and filling breakfast option for both kids and adults. Did I forget to tell you that it is tasty too? Yes, the taste of the masala oats recipe I have given here is very close to the store bought one. We have to forget Noodles masala now and change to Oats masala.

Oats has soluble fiber which reduces bad cholesterol levels. Hence it helps to decrease the risk of heart problems. It also helps to regulate blood sugar levels.


Masala Oats

Cooking Oats based dishes does not mean that you end up in scaring your kids and hubby. Plain boiled oats is boring unless you are in weight loss program or in diet control. But Chocolate oats and masala oats are tasty.



My kid likes Masala Oats and I also like to include oats in my diet occasionally. I bought Saffola Masala Oats once when we went for grocery shopping. When I was cooking it on a fine evening, my kid came and asked me what I am cooking because of the nice aroma. I told him that it is Masala oats. He told me that he wanted to taste it.

I offered the masala oats to him and he liked it so much. I did not expect that. Though my hubby does not have much interest towards oats, my kid likes it. The saffola masala oats is not as tasty as noodles. But their masala is close to the noodles masala.As my kid loved it, he started asking me frequently. Masala oats is definitely the healthiest option especially for kids. I was looking to prepare masala oats at home itself for a long time.

I did not hesitate to offer him as I thought it was better than noodles. It happened long time back. I had some kind of negativity towards noodles. So, I ensured that I buy noodles once in a while just to please the palates. Now, the things have changed. Everyone put their thumbs down for noodles including noodles lovers.

I definitely miss the taste of the popular noodles but I feel blessed that it is banned at least now before making further destruction to the community.

When my kid asked for Masala oats last week, I decided to prepare masala oats at home without delaying further. I had to do a minor research on the ingredients of popular masala oats brands and managed to take the taste of my homemade masala oats close to them. I would say that I am completely delighted with the outcome. My kid had it for Saturday breakfast happily without complaining.

Ingredients





  • Oats - 200 g
  • Big Onion - 1/2
  • Tomato - 1/2
  • Ginger - 1/4 inch
  • Garlic - 1 clove
  • Coriander powder - 1/8 tsp(optional)
  • Corn flour - 1 tbsp
  • Carrot - 1 small
  • Beans - 2
  • Green Peas - 3 tbsp
  • Salt - To taste
  • Sugar - 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp or as required to get the desired color
  • Coconut grated - 1/2 tsp(optional)
  • Cardamom - 1
  • Cinnamon - 1/4 inch stick
  • Oil -  1 tsp
  • Water - As required
 
Instructions
  1. Chop carrot and beans finely. Pressure cook carrot, beans and peas for 2 whistles with sufficient water and little salt.
  2. Chop the big onions roughly. Peel off the garlic skin and ginger. Grind chopped onion slices, ginger and garlic in mixer and keep aside.
  3. Heat a pan and dry roast oats and transfer it to a plate.
  4. Heat oil in the same pan. Add the onion, ginger and garlic paste, cinnamon stick, cardamom and saute till the raw smell of onion paste goes off.
  5. Add the roasted oats and add sufficient water(400 ml approximately). You can add more water little by little as and when required while cooking.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder(optional) sugar and salt. Adjust the measurements according to your taste. Mix well.
  7. Mix corn flour in 3 tbsp water. Mix well without lumps. Add this corn flour mixture to the oats. Mix well.
  8. Add grated coconut in this stage. Mix well and cook till the oats get blended with the spices and the raw smell of corn flour goes off. Add water  little by little as and when required.
Masala Oats is ready to serve. Garnish with coriander leaves if desired.


Oats Masala

Notes:

1. Adding grated coconut is optional. You can skip it if required. The coconut should be grated finely. You can also grind it in a mixie without adding water and make a fine powder before adding it.

2. Adding sugar is optional. It gives a mild sweet taste to the masala oats which I liked it. Some branded masala oats add sugar.

3. Corn flour is used for binding. I have seen some brands are using some chemical binding agent in their masala oats, Hence I used corn flour for thickening and binding. It helps to bind the oats well like noodles. You can skip it if you want.

4. Adjust the red chilli powder quantity as per your taste. 

5. When you prepare the masala oats for the first time, just add the ingredients little by little. Check the taste and adjust to get your desired taste.
