In today’s era of artificially induced beauty, there are various cosmetic brands that claim to provide
instant solutions to hair and face related concerns with their array of products. Though the effectiveness of each product is debatable, it is certain that almost all of the cosmetic products contain at least minimal level of chemical elements. It is known to moisturize, strengthen, smoothen hair and prevent greying till old age.

Rice water is best and cheapest cleanser you can find in this world. Apply on the skin and massage it for a minute or two. With everyday use, your skin will become soft, clear, tight and nourished. It can also be mixed with lemon juice to make a good face and body cleanser.

Rice water as a toner: 

After a face wash, it can be used as a toner by applying on the skin directly. It helps in greatly reducing the pore size and keeping your skin clean.

Rice water for skin lightening and whitening:

Rice water is said to lighten the skin tone when used everyday. It can be applied on the skin and left to dry.

Rice water for acne:

Applying it on the acne with the help of a cotton ball, helps reduce the inflammation and the acne.

Rice Water Benefits for Hair - How to use Rice water as Hair shampoo and Hair mask:

Post your normal shampoo routine, wet your hair and scalp fully with the rice water. Massage the scalp and leave it for 5 minutes before rinsing with normal water so that your scalp and hair strands absorbs the benefits of rice water.

For a rice water hair mask, wet the scalp and hair with rice water and leave it for 20 to 25 minutes. Take care that the rice water is not too watery and flowing. Wash with shampoo and conditioner after that.

Instead of using plain rice water, it is good to use few drops of lemon juice, amla (gooseberry) powder or shikakai (Acacia Concinna) powder along with rice water. So, you can get double benefits at the same time.


How to prepare rice water?

You can either use regular rice water or fermented rice water for hair and skin. Fermented rice water has many benefits. But you have to stop fermenting the rice water in the right time.

Rice water:

Regular  Rice water is prepared by washing the rice and soaking it for 15 to 20 minutes. The water is then mixed along with the rice till it becomes cloudy. Strain the water and you have your Rice water ready.

Another way of preparing the rice water is by boiling the rice with excess water and straining it. The rice can also be allowed to cook and the remaining water can be strained and diluted.

You can also use the water which you have used to soak the leftover rice. In Tamil Nadu, we use this method widely to prepare rice water. It does not allow cooked rice to get spoiled.

Fermented rice water:

For fermented rice water, the normal rice water has to be kept in room temperature for a day (8 hrs to 48 hrs) depending on the climate and warmth level inside the room. The rice water is fermented and can be used when it turns sour. It is then heated to stop the fermentation process and you have your fermented rice water ready.

It is thick and therefore has to be diluted based on whether it is used for the hair or skin. Fermented rice water is rich in antioxidants, Vitamins B & E, minerals and Pitera. Pitera is an ingredient obtained from the fermentation of rice water and is known for its anti- ageing and cell regeneration properties.

How to store Rice Water?

Rice water can be bottled and stored in the fridge for a week. Before use, make sure to shake the bottle well.
